How can we help you climb Jade Mountain Yushan ?

Updated 4 Feb 2018

Notice : Jade Mountain = Yushan 玉山  and Snow Mountain = Xueshan 雪山

You want to go to Jade Mountain or Snow Mountain at the cheapest price ?

Here below you can learn about how to DIY Apply permits for Jade Mountain or Snow Mountain : you must have 2 permits for each mountain !

Getting permits can be the most difficult part of the hike ! Also read this updated Oct 2017 article : https://hikingtaiwan.club/2017/07/hiking-xueshan-without-permit/

FAQ Equipment for hiking High Mountain Taiwan

If we have time, we also offer you 3 options for your DIY Hiking trip, or you choose "A la carte", you decide what you only need, see below.

If you have time then you can apply permit for Jade Mountain or permit for Snow Mountain by yourself, the system changed and it became much easier than before, see below.

We were workers, busy in the office, we had little time to go hiking.

No time to get the permits, no time to go there, no time to go hiking there, no time to organize, no time to prepare...

Yushan Mountain, Snow Mountain, Qilai Mountain were a Dream...

Then the economic crisis has arrived and we were laid off from our jobs then we had time ...

Now we want to share that Dream with you !

If you have no time then we'll prepare everything for you.

Singapore people are always asking about FOOD ! LoL :-))

==> you can pre-order meal dinner + breakfast + brunch at Xueshan and at Yushan for roughly 800 NT per person. Meals are cooked by aboriginal people and are traditional taiwanese cuisine. In that case, we have to Pre-order and Prepay because they carry the fresh food on their back ! Then they carry trash back to the trailhead...

No obligation, you can bring your own food and cooking stove to the mountains if you prefer bak kut teh 🙂 (Taiwanese love Bak kut teh by the way, please bring to Taiwan ...)

Read this article to order food by yourself : https://hikingtaiwan.club/2016/10/how-to-get-meal-sleeping-bag-at-snow-mountain-xueshan-%E9%9B%AA%E5%B1%B1-taiwan/

Notice about the 2 permits for Taiwan mountains :

How to apply Police climbing permit in Taiwan ?

In Taiwan each mountain over 2900 m requires a climbing permit, why ?

because in the permit you have to precise your itinerary and date/time plan. So in case of accident, the police rescue team can search and rescue you ! (at least they try)

Moreover it's highly recommended that you subscribe to an insurance (you SHOULD apply in your own country) which covers you in the mountain climbing activity over 3000m. Rescue fees are very high, imagine if you are a rescue member to search and carry a body, it's hard job...

DIY Apply Entry Mountain permit here :  https://nv2.npa.gov.tw/NM103-604Client/    then SELECT the 2nd TAB.

Yes we know this is in Chinese of Taiwan, you have https://translate.google.com/#zh-CN/en/ to help you.

This permit is easy to get if you provide all the information requested by the Police.

How to apply National Parks permit in Taiwan ?

In Taiwan, most of the mountains belong to different National Parks which protect the environment :

Jade Mountain belongs to Yushan National Park so you MUST have the 2nd permit from this National Park.

Snow Mountain belongs to Xueba National Park so you MUST have another permit from Xueba National Park.

Nanhu Dashan or Qilai Mountain belong to Taroko National Park so you MUST have your 2nd permit from Taroko National Park.

Different National Parks means completely different systems to apply permits, it also means Pain in the A... ==> UPDATE Jan 2018 they are all on the same system now ! Yeahhh ! But rules are different for each park : Yushan National Park is the strictest (the most strict) for the safety of you hikers.

DIY Apply permit in English herehttps://npm.cpami.gov.tw/en/index.aspx

Read carefully the legal notice, and bring your ID or a copy of your ID for control at the trailhead or for control inside the cabins or impromptu control on the trail (rare but it happens).

The applicant shall be aware of the truthfulness of their team members’ information and the itinerary plan. In case that they fill in the data for the Park entry application under the circumstance where they already knew the information was misrepresented or have fraudulently used the name of others, they shall be suspected of committing forgery under Article 210 of the Criminal Code or the crime of making a civil servant conduct untrue recordkeeping under Article 214 of the Criminal Code. If the offense is proved true, the Park will reject the application according to law in the first instance, followed by suspending the applicant’s rights and reporting such criminal conduct to the juridical competent authorities by providing relevant information.

Emergency Coordinator
The emergency coordinator cannot be within the group (i.e. a friend or family member). They need to be aware of the group’s whereabouts, so that if assistance or rescue is needed, they can contact the authorities.

==> that person has a big LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY in case of accident, she's in charge of your life !

Do not book your plane before getting permits ! It's really hard to get permits for Yushan, no kidding! There are only 92 beds each day ! For Xueshan it's easier : 106 beds...

Because it's private information please send by Line or WhatsApp, it is safer than on internet.

Moreover it is much faster.

Pack2 Jade Mountain / Snow Mountain Package

We apply the 2 permits for one mountain for you and we search, book or rent transportation for you. The earlier you book the car, the better.

In that case, you need to find other hikers to share the cost with you.

It is good for a group of 4 or a group of 7 people to share the cost.

Moreover a hiking trip is minimum 2 days as you sleep one night in the cabin of the mountain so the rental of the car is doubled.

Therefore we need your information. Also let us know what kind of hikers you are (slow to enjoy the nature, casual, regular, challenging hiker ?).

Hi I’m from Singapore planning a solo trip to Taiwan in February 2018. Planning to hike one of the 百岳 while I’m there. Previous experience climbed 雪山. Is it possible to do 玉山 solo during the period of my travel?

    • Hiking-Taiwan-Club says:

HI Darryl, sorry but Yushan National Park is CLOSED during all February. Other possible 百岳 are the Hehuanshan group (very easy peaks), Nanhu Dashan (not recommended solo), Qilai peaks (really not recommended solo). Anyway during Snow season, all the National Parks have strict rules and request Snow equipment like crampons, helmet, ice axe etc… Always buy your own insurance before hiking.

Hi. I am hoping to climb Xueshan solo in January 2018. I am an outdoor professional have mountaineering training from NIM in India, have climbed 6000 m peaks, have taken month-long NOLS backpacking course, am WFR and CPR trained and have led dozens of treks/climbing trips in Himalayas and USA. Will I be able to get permits? I am happy to join other experienced solo hikers if this is required but am reluctant to be on a guided tour. Please advise.

    • Hiking-Taiwan-Club says:

Hello Zachary, hiking solo is usually possible but Snow Season is already announced! More than One month earlier this year! So only teams of 3 to 6 hikers are accepted. They ask for proofs (photos with altitude signs+snow) and they will check your equipment at the trailhead. With your experience you can be the leader. Snow Mountain is VERY easy compared to what you have done, you may be disappointed. For you, More challenging hikes are HOLY RIDGE, QILAI EAST RIDGE, MAPOLASI RIDGE…
Eligible applicants: mountain-climbing teams with at least 3 members, in which all the members
shall have the outfits and equipment required on the snowfield, and the team leader shall have a
snowfield training certificate or mountain-climbing guide license.
Head: climbing helmet, snow goggles, thermal hat
Feet: 12-point (or more) crampons, waterproof mountaineering boots, gaiters, mountaineering socks.
      Hands: ice axe, snow-proof gloves
      Hip: climbing harness
Body: thermal snow coat and trousers
Others: descender, ascenders, belay device, locking carabiners, snow stakes, climbing ropes, accessory cords, etc.

Hi, I am planning to climb Xueshan mountain on Nov 6th & 7th and am currently trying to apply the park permit.
However, I see that I am required to upload proof of mountain climbing experience. Therefore, will you please advise what proof is required?
I climbed Mt Bromo in Indonesia in May this year and will a photo be good enough?
    Please advise.

    • Hiking-Taiwan-Club says:

Hi Sharon, a photo of you which proves that you’ve been over 3000 m and that you will not suffer from altitude sickness. You can have the correct photo at Hehuanshan without permit. Pay attention to the legal warning at the first page of permit, read carefully before clicking too fast… Welcome for hiking in Formosa Island !

    Hi!

Are solo hikers allowed to climb Snow Mountain or does it have to be in a group? I’ve booked a flight to Taipei this October and am wondering if I should hike Snow Mountain.

We go climbing Taiwan Mountains every month, it costs about 3000 – 5000 NT each for a very small group (renting a car+driver is the most expensive to share).
